CHAPTER SIX

Bone, thought Nick. So Nelson Strain now consisted entirely of bone. Then it was playing out just as he’d feared. Exactly like the story he’d planned for that first sequel, which Roz, in her infinite wisdom, had kiboshed before he could even put pen to paper. Now he was living out that unwritten sequel of his for real.

The facility lay a mile ahead of them, its illuminating green glow blending with the heavy rain to form an eerie, otherworldly bank of sprawling fog. Nick saw it and yanked on the car’s handbrake, killing the engine, but kept the wiper blades going.

‘There,’ he said, pointing at the distant building. ‘That’s the place.’

‘Dammit, you’ll drain the battery if you keep these wipers going,’ yelled Capello. ‘Do you want to kill us?’

‘Ease off, Capello. It’s just while we discuss the abandoned facility ahead of us. Then when we’ve done that, I’ll switch them off before we head out. In any case, there are worse ways of draining a car’s battery without you realising. Leaving the main headlights on, for example. Ditto the radio, cassette or CD-player. Even leaving the car door open while you’re outside is a killer, in all likelihood triggering the internal cabin lights without you realising. So less of the damned attitude.’

‘Any other methods you wanna mention, Mister Battery-Drain King, or shall we maybe stop wasting our precious bloody time?’

‘No, I think those are the main ones,’ said Nick, keeping calm, aware that Capello was still holding a gun.

‘Why this place?’ Capello asked.

‘Let’s start with what this place is. Then that will flow naturally into your first question.’

‘Sure. What this place is?’

‘That’s grammatically incorrect. What is this place?’

‘You know what I mean, dammit!’

Nick buttoned his lip. This guy truly was a ‘livewire’. Realising he needed to placate him, Nick switched off the wiper blades, then continued. ‘No one knows. It was once a top-secret research facility for Stalkford’s chemical and germ warfare association. They were briefly affiliated with the military, but in the main it was run by amateurs and enthusiasts. Until the place was closed down and taken over by NullTec.’

‘Who’s NullTec?’

‘Who are NullTec? Either that, or what is NullTec?’

‘You want me to bloody well frag your ass?’ Capello shrieked. ‘Who are NullTec?’

‘No one truly knows,’ said Nick, fairly confident now that Capello wasn’t going to shoot him, no matter how much he ribbed him. ‘Let’s just call them a shadowy pharmaceutical tech company specialising in psycho-kinetic research and morally dubious brain experiments.’

‘Oh, those guys.’

‘But they, too, eventually moved on. Leaving the place abandoned, along with its deadly array of forgotten, half-perfected experimental medical and scientific apparatus. Who knows what kind of lethal munitions are lying about in there, just waiting for some passing crazed psychopath to use and abuse.’

‘Like Nelson Strain, for instance?’

‘You got it, Capello. You see, I dreamed all this up in my head. I never wrote a sequel in the end, but I kept a few outlines percolating in my brain. That’s what we’re seeing now.
